Ingredients

French Toast Casserole

  • 1 pound sourdough or French bread cut into chunks
  • 3 cups chopped apples about 2 large apples
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole or 2% milk
  • ½ cup heavy whipping cream
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup light brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon

Cinnamon Streusel Topping

  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1½ teaspoons apple pie spice
  • ½ cup cold salted butter cut into pieces

Instructions

  • Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Layer the bread cubes and chopped apples evenly in the dish.
  • Whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, both sugars, vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour evenly over the bread and gently press down.
  • Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  • Mix the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and apple pie spice. Cut in the cold butter until crumbly. Refrigerate separately.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Sprinkle the streusel over the casserole.
  • Bake uncovered for 45–55 minutes until golden brown and the center is set. Tent with foil if the top browns too quickly.
  • Cool for 5–10 minutes and serve warm with maple syrup or your favorite toppings.

Notes

For the best results, use day-old bread and keep the streusel refrigerated until baking. If baking directly from a very cold dish, allow extra time as needed and follow the baking dish manufacturer's temperature-change guidance.
