How to Make a Delicious Tator Tot Breakfast Casserole
This tator tot breakfast casserole is the perfect comfort food for a chilly day! You can also prep it in advance to help make your mornings as smooth as possible (this recipe had me at “make-ahead.”) 🙂
It’s easy for my family to get in a breakfast rut of the same cereal, frozen waffles or oatmeal. For a special breakfast treat, this tater tot breakfast casserole is amazing and so quick to prepare!
Ingredients for Tater Tot Breakfast Casserole:
You only need less than 10 ingredients, but this has so much flavor!
- 1 bag (approx 30 oz) frozen Tater Tots
- 2 lbs breakfast sausage
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese
- 2 cups milk
- 8 eggs
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
Supplies Needed: Large skillet, 9×13 inch baking dish, one large mixing bowl
Substitutions:
For a vegetarian option, swap the breakfast sausage for any preferred vegetable such as peppers, sun dried tomatoes, celery, or onions. For a healthier version, you can use turkey sausage and less cheese.
Directions for Tator Tot Breakfast Casserole:
- Preheat ovens to 350 degrees and lightly coat 9×13 inch pan with cooking spray.
- Cook sausage in the large skillet until fully cooked (no longer pink) and drain grease. Tip: Never pour hot grease down the drain, as it can cause costly plumbing issues. Rather, drain into a plastic container with a lid (such as an empty cream-cheese container) and throw away.
- In a large bowl, mix the entire bag of tater tots, cheddar and mozzarella cheeses, and sausage. Pour into the greased 9x 13 cooking pan.
- Whisk eggs, milk, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. (You can use the same bowl as the sausage/tot mixture to save a dish!)
- Pour egg mixture over the tot mixture in the baking pan.
- Bake (uncovered) for 60-65 minutes, or until eggs are set.
- If baking later, cover and refrigerate until ready to bake. This may add a few minutes to the baking time.
Note: If you are heating the tator tot breakfast casserole after freezing, let it thaw completely at room temperature (approximately 3 hours) before baking, then heat as directed above.

How Far Can I Make This in Advance?
I’d recommend making this tater tot breakfast casserole the night before or one day in advance. Just cover and refrigerate until you are ready to pop it in the oven to help make your mornings as stress-free as possible. You can also freeze it for two-three months.
How Should I Store Leftovers?
Cover the tator tot breakfast casserole with Saran Wrap or store in Tupperware and refrigerate. This should stay fresh 2-3 days; just microwave at 30 second intervals to reheat.
Perfect Presentation Platters
This tater tot breakfast casserole doesn’t need anything fancy! Here’s what I used:
Baking Pan: I used this white stoneware baking pan from Target that I get so much use out of!
Plaid Plates: There are so many options you could do, such as these plaid dinner plates, these tartan salad plates, or these plaid dessert plates (I especially love that these are an assortment of both red and green plaid.) For a bit more of an investment, Pottery Barn also has a pretty plaid stoneware set.
Enjoy!
I hope you love this tator tot breakfast casserole as much as I did! Thanks so much to www.ThePlainChicken.com for the recipe inspo!
