Expert Tips
- Get Rid Of The Grease: Drain the beef well after browning it. If there’s a lot of fat leftover in the pan, remove the beef and wipe the skillet clean before continuing. You don’t want too much excess oil, it can make the whole dish greasy.
- Cook Beef Fully: Be sure to cook the beef through before assembling and finishing the rest of the casserole. You want that browned, caramelized flavor of the meat.
- Soften Cream Cheese: Bring the cream cheese to room temperature and let it soften before adding into the casserole. It will melt nicely into and evenly distribute with the meat mixture.
- Add Mushrooms or Veggies: Bell peppers and onions are classic for a cheesesteak, but try adding in sauteed mushrooms or any other veggies you have on hand. They’ll bulk up the dish and add flavor and nutrition. Just be sure to dice everything the same size for even cooking.
- Swap in a Different Meat or Cheeses: Ground beef works great, but try ground turkey or chicken for something lighter, or use sliced or cubed leftover steak if you have it. Try mozzarella, pepper jack or cheddar cheese, too – almost anything goes!
Storage
If you’ve got leftovers, consider yourself lucky! Store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
To reheat, simply warm the casserole in a 350°F oven until hot and cheese is melty, around 15 minutes. We recommend covering the dish, so the meat doesn’t dry out.
You can even make this dish ahead of time, too. Cook the casserole and let it cool, the store in airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight before you’re ready to cook, the bake per the instructions.

FAQs
A traditional Philly cheesesteak is typically made with a thin cut of steak, sauteed onions, and sometimes bell peppers, and a melty cheese like provolone, American, or “wiz”.
Any cheese that’s melty works perfectly. We like provolone for that classic flavor, but mozzarella, cheddar, pepper jack or even American would be delicious!
Absolutely. You can add in any shortcut pasta, like rigatoni or shells, to bulk up the casserole. You could add large croutons or chunks of bread to really channel the traditional cheesesteak flavors.
