Why You’ll Love this Recipe

  • 6 ingredient dessert recipe. It’s truly that simple but such a showstopper.
  • Great for gifting or bringing to a party. I’ve brought these to school events, parties, and potlucks. Everyone always loves to eat them and asks me for the recipe!
  • The ideal sweet for beginner bakers and kids. If baking isn’t your thing or you are trying to learn, these apple roses are an impressive yet simple way to start.

Leanna’s Tip: Be sure to put your puff pastry into the fridge to defrost the night before you want to make these apple roses. This will guarantee it’s thawed and ready to cut and roll.

Ingredients

  • Red apples: Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Pink Lady are my favorite. They are both sweet and tart for the perfect dessert flavor in the roses.
  • Lemon juice: To bring out the sweetness of the apples and also keep them from turning brown.
  • Puff pastry: This is in the freezer section of the grocery store. Be sure to thaw it in the fridge before assembling.
  • Granulated sugar: Adds a hint of sweetness.
  • Cinnamon: Optional to use, but I find it adds so much flavor.
  • Powdered sugar: To garnish at the end and add a little hint of extra sweetness.

7. Cool slightly, dust with powdered sugar.

Expert Tips

  • To help the apples soften prior to baking, we microwave them in a little bit of water to help start the cooking process. This will make them the perfect tender texture after baking.
  • Be sure to use a nonstick muffin tin that is greased with cooking spray. Also line the muffin cups with parchment paper. This will help the puff pastry apple roses to pop out effortlessly after baking.
  • You can use any apple you like, but we prefer one with sweet and tart flavor like Honeycrisp or Pink Lady since they pair best with the sweet cinnamon sugar.
  • Make sure you slice the apples the same thickness. This is essential to having the roses bake evenly and also for easy shaping of the roses. Apple slices that are too thick will break when you roll them up in the puff pastry.

Serving Apple Roses

These little cuties look beautiful on just about anything! We linked a ton of goodies in our Amazon Storefront, plus here are some of our other favorites:

Cake Stands: There is something so charming about a wooden cake stand with a glass lid, like this one from Amazon! I love this beautiful, checkered cake-stand from MacKenzie-Childs! For a more budget-friendly option, you can’t go wrong with this wooden stand from Walmart. I also love this marble and acacia cake stand!

Food Boards: You could use this wooden food board from Walmart for so many things! I also love this acacia version that’s under $15 for a smaller set up, as well as this checkered board from Temu for a great price! Antique Hardware has this set of 3 that I get so much use out of.

White Serving Platters: I use this marble tray from Walmart all the time, for an amazing price!! For another all-white option, this white marble pastry board from World Market is my favorite!

Kitchen Links: I get asked all the time about the products in the background of my kitchen. Much of it is from MacKenzie-Childs, which I have slowly grown a collection of over the years! My favorites are this checkered chopping board, my black and white checkered teapot, and the gray and white checkered utensil holder. I also have this enamel canister that you can find in smallmedium, or large.

Storage

If you have any leftover apple roses, transfer them to a zip top bag or airtight container and store in the refrigerator, where they should stay fresh for 2 to 3 days. You can reheat them in the microwave or oven for a couple of minutes. They are also delicious cold!

I don’t recommend freezing apple roses since they will change texture once they thaw. If you want to assemble them in advance, you can do this a couple of hours beforehand, just not too far before to keep the apples from turning brown.

FAQs

Can I use another type of dough besides puff pastry for apple roses?

We like puff pastry the best since it’s light and flaky in texture and also easy to work with. You could also use store-bought rolled pie dough, but we can’t promise the texture will be as delicious.

What apples are best for apple puff pastry roses?

We like an apple that’s both sweet and tart which is why we use Honeycrisp or Pink Lady.

Why are my apples mushy inside of the puff pastry roses?

You probably cooked them too long in the microwave to begin with, or baked them for too long in the oven.

What can I serve with apple roses?

We love them with a dusting of powdered sugar, or you can warm them up and serve with a scoop of ice cream.
