Ingredients

  • Refried Beans: Creamy and protein-packed for the perfect base.
  • Cream Cheese: Smooth and tangy, soften this slightly for ease.
  • Sour Cream: To create a cool, rich layer.
  • Taco Seasoning: Brings that signature taco flavoring to the dip. Use your favorite blend from the store or make your own and keep on hand for future uses,
  • Lime Juice: Bright and citrusy, use freshly squeezed.
  • Guacamole: Use your favorite store-bought or homemade version. An extra squeeze of lime will help it from browning.
  • Salsa: Use your go-to brand or variety, but we recommend using a chunky salsa for the best texture in the dip.
  • Mexican Cheese Blend: Use finely shredded.
  • Roma Tomatoes: Fresh and ripe, and a vibrant pop of color.
  • Black Olives: A salty, briny layer.
  • Green Onions: For a mild onion flavor.
  • Cilantro: A fresh finishing touch.
  • Pickled Jalapeños: Tangy and spicy, for a little kick.

How To Make Layered Taco Dip

1. Spread the refried beans into an even layer in a 9×13-inch serving dish.

2. In a medium bowl, beat together the softened cream cheese, sour cream, taco seasoning, and lime juice until smooth and fluffy.

3. Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over the refried beans.
4. Carefully layer the guacamole over the cream cheese mixture, followed by the salsa.

5. Sprinkle the shredded Mexican cheese evenly over the salsa.

6. Top with the diced tomatoes, sliced black olives, green onions, cilantro, and jalapeños if desired.

Expert Tips

  • Use a Wide, Shallow Dish: Build the dip in a vessel like this versus something tall and deep, so you get each layer in every bite.
  • Add Lettuce and Tomatoes Last: Wait to add these fresh toppings until close to serving time so they stay fresh and don’t wilt or water down the dip.
  • Let Base Layer Come to Room Temperature: Allowing the beans and cream cheese layer to soften slightly before mixing will help create a smoother spread.
  • Chill Dip Before Serving: Let the finished dip set up in the fridge for at least 30 minutes to let flavors meld before serving.

Variations

  • Add Meat: We love a vegetarian version with veggies and beans (you could even add black beans!), but try adding crumbled ground beef seasoned with a taco blend for a heartier dip with that classic taco filling.
  • Use Greek Yogurt: Try cool and tangy Greek yogurt instead of sour cream for a lighter version.
  • Top With a Crunchy Layer: Add crushed tortilla chips to the very top for an extra crunchy element.
  • Serve in Individual Cups: Scoop the dip, or build in individual cups, for easy grab-and-go portions. Great for parties and entertaining.

Storage

Transfer leftover dip to an airtight container, or cover the original serving dish with plastic wrap pressed directly on the surface, and store in the fridge for 3-4 days. The faster the dip is eaten, the fresher the lettuce, guacamole and tomato layers will be.

This is a great dip to make ahead of time, too. Prep it in advance, making sure to completely layer the guacamole in between the cream cheese mixture and salsa to avoid oxidizing, then cover and store in the fridge. We recommend waiting to add the fresh toppings like lettuce, tomatoes and green onions until right before serving, too.
